Amid the fight against coronavirus spreading, there has been an open dispute over the ownership of a bulk of protective surgical masks in a number of 240,000. According to a Swiss media report, Germany is preventing masks being exported to Switzerland. Germany government's act in detaining masks from Switzerland suppliers have caused strong objection from Switzerland. Not long ago, Germany has banned export of masks and gloves over coronavirus combat as the world are scrambling to protect supplies of medical kits over fear.
Similar to Germany, in Switzerland, supplies of protective equips are dwindling. The Infection Prevention Department of the country had informed the hospitals that doctors should wear surgical masks for as long as 8 hours, rather than 2 hours as they used to do. It is also suggested the general citizens not wear surgical masks but standard protective masks, in order to ensure that doctors in the hospitals can have enough surgical masks to protect themselves in possibly highly contagious environment.
The Swiss Federal Economic Administration has made official protest and had summoned German Ambassador in Switzerland in negotiating the dispute.
As of March 8, confirmed cases in Germany has jumped up to 1040, with 193 new cases in a single day. Fear over the rising trend has led German minister to call for cancellation of events with 1000 people in the country. In Switzerland, the total number of infections confirmed has come up to over 300, with a second patient died.
Face masks export have shown urgent demands on a global scale as the epidemic looms.
